Oncology and Hematology are medical fields in which changes occur so rapidly that it is difficult for physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals caring for cancer patients to keep up with developments in related sub-specialties such as medical, surgical, gynecologic oncology, medical oncology, orthopedic oncology, otolaryngological oncology; pathology, radiology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, urological oncology, and hematology; even if they have been trained in particular subspecialties. Likewise, new data from preclinical studies helps shape implementation of current standards of care while also identifying aspects of cancer that can be targets for new treatments. The KUCC Cancer Grant Rounds brings basic and clinical researchers within the institution and around the world to update their newest findings in cancer research to achieve those objectives.

Oncology and Hematology are medical fields in which changes occur so rapidly that it is difficult for physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals caring for cancer patients to keep up with developments in related sub-specialties such as medical, surgical,  gynecologic oncology, medical oncology, orthopedic oncology, otolaryngological oncology; pathology, radiology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, urological oncology, and hematology; even if they have been trained in particular sub-specialties. At the national and international levels, the need for multidisciplinary collaboration has been well recognized, and national and international conferences have brought the sub-specialties together to exchange ideas. At the patient-care level, there is a need for sub-specialties within oncology to discuss and develop a consensus on clinical management. However, it is often difficult, during clinic hours, to get members of these sub-specialties together to discuss individual cases. By convening Friday conferences of faculty experts in surgical, medical and radiation oncology/hematology, as well as basic scientists to discuss individual cases, KU Medical Center believes that cancer treatment and management plans will be broadened by providing a forum where health care providers interested in providing better care and service to patients will learn appropriate practical management skills. This will serve as an avenue to review standards and National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines for the treatment of malignant disease.
