Overview:  This symposium, headlined by the team physicians for the Kansas City Royals and the Kansas City Chiefs and the orthopedic staff of The University of Kansas Hospital, includes lectures and discussions on the latest advances in sports medicine diagnostics, surgery, rehabilitation, and injury prevention techniques.  Attendees will gain exposure to the latest in medical care for the competitive and recreational athlete.  Featured topics will include hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, and concussion injuries.

Target Audience:  Current Concepts in the Management of the Athlete will target athletic trainers, physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, nurses, and other health care professionals involved in the care, treatment and prevention of athletic injuries.



At the completion of this conference participants should be able to:  
  1. Identify implications of ligamentous injuries of the wrist.
  2. Understand the presentation and treatment of elbow dislocations and ligamentous injuries of the elbow.
  3. Understand the biologic principles applied to labral repair stabilization techniques.
  4. Understand how the kinetic chain is involved in shoulder/elbow function.
  5. Understand the techniques used to return athletes to the field after upper extremity injuries.
  6. Understand the acute presentation of intra-articular injuries of the hip and the treatment options
  7. Understand the biology of healing after an ACL reconstruction and the factors associated with a safe return to contact sports
  8. Understand the presentation of a high ankle sprain and the treatment of associated syndesmotic instability
  9. Identify novel rehabilitation techniques following lower extremity injuries and surgery.
  10. Understand the techniques used to safely return athletes to the field after lower extremity injuries.
  11. Understand the presentation a concussion and the current treatments.
  12. Identify spinal injuries and describe treatments.
  13. Understand the rehabilitation principles associated with head injuries and concussion.
  14. Understand appropriate fluid management in athletes.
  15. Understand the benefits of the use of science and technology in sports.
  16. Understand the importance of mental preparedness in athletes.
